Welcome to the wiki for the Early Career Event for Social Scientists organised by C-SAP (Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics).

About the event

This will be a two-day residential event (29-30 November 2011 at Hornton Grange, Edgbaston Park Road, Birmingham) for recently-appointed teaching staff, postdocs and post-graduates with teaching responsibilities. The aim of the event is to explore issues, share ideas, consider future needs and build support networks, with an emphasis on addressing practical issues and the realities of balancing academic roles when people might be located either in specialist subject or multi-disciplinary departments. You can follow the links to learn more about the programme, the organisers and participants as well as any relevant resources

The purpose of the wiki

The wiki will serve a number of purposes: to start with, it will be a space to store documents of relevance to the event including presentations, handouts etc. It will also be used to facilitate communication between the participants and organisers, giving them access to safe space for collaboration (this space is password protected and can only be accessed by invited users). Finally, participation in the wiki will facilitate participants' learning process before and during the event and give them a chance to enhance their digital literacy skills.

Contributing to the wiki

If you can read this page, you will have received an invitation to join this space as a "writer" which means you can view and edit pages, upload files and create new pages (but not delete them - you will have to contact Anna a.gruszczynska@bham.ac.uk to do that). Please follow the rules of netiquette when contributing to the wiki and remember it is very much work in progress and a learning space.

Troubleshooting

If you are having any problems at all with using the wiki please contact Anna Gruszczynska at a.gruszczynska@bham.ac.uk or consult the PBworks Manual.

Thanks for setting this up, Anna.

I hope all of you attending the session will share your experiences with us and I will shortly be asking you to post a short pen portrait/biography of yourselves, tell us what you would like to get out of the event and consider what examples/materials from your experience to date you might bring with you.

Whilst we have a draft programme for the event we have changed it in the past to meet the needs and interests of those attending. Given the good number who will be coming, we can also split into smaller groups if there are different interests.

I look forward to meeting and working with you all in November.

Ranald
